The following introduces the structural performance characteristics of EN standard 1.4436 (AISI 316L) duplex stainless steel:
Corrosion Resistance:
– 1.4436 is a super austenitic stainless steel with a microstructure dominated by austenite and a small amount of ferrite.
– It has good resistance to general corrosion, pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion, but its resistance to stress corrosion cracking caused by chloride is not as good as 2205 duplex stainless steel.
– The chromium (16-18%) and molybdenum (2-3%) contents in 1.4436 provide corrosion protection in a variety of environments, but not to the same extent as the high-alloy 2205 grade.
Mechanical Properties:
– 1.4436 has lower tensile and yield strengths compared to 2205 duplex stainless steel.
– Typical tensile strengths range from 480 to 680 MPa and yield strengths from 170 to 450 MPa.
– The austenitic microstructure of 1.4436 provides good ductility, typically around 40-50% elongation.
– The toughness of 1.4436 is also generally higher than that of 2205 duplex stainless steel.
Thermal and Low Temperature Performance:
– 1.4436 maintains its mechanical properties and corrosion resistance at both high and low temperatures.
– It can be used in cryogenic applications such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities, as well as in high temperature environments such as petrochemical plants.
Weldability:
– 1.4436 is considered weldable, with fewer concerns about microstructural changes during welding than 2205 duplex stainless steel.
– The austenitic microstructure of 1.4436 is less sensitive to phase transformations induced by welding.
Cost-Effectiveness:
– 1.4436 is generally less expensive than 2205 duplex stainless steel because it contains smaller amounts of alloying elements.
– This makes 1.4436 a more cost-effective choice for applications where slightly lower corrosion resistance and mechanical properties are acceptable.
